In 2020, we are celebrating 18 years of NAMIWalks, the nation's largest series of mental health awareness and fundraising events. NAMIWalks Virginia brings together families, friends, and communities to raise awareness for mental health and crucial funds which enable NAMI Virginia and our local NAMI affiliates to provide truly transformational education programs and support groups to youth, families, and adults free of cost. NAMIWalks is a celebration of recovery. NAMIWalks is a fun, family-friendly event and there is no cost to register.
There are many ways you can make a difference via NAMIWalks: as a sponsor, committee member, team captain or team member, individual walker, virtual walker, or walk day volunteer! However you participate in NAMIWalks, you will be joining NAMI's national movement!
On October 10, all roads lead to our second National Day of Hope.
That's when NAMIWalks events unite across the country, in-person or virtually. On that day, NAMIWalks participants, mental health advocates and NAMI partners will make strides to support NAMI's mission and celebrate Mental Health for All during this demanding year of challenges and changes.
What is A National Day of Hope? It's a day when many of our NAMIWalks sites hold their event simultaneously across the country. For Spring NAMIWalks, that day was May 30 and was a big success: a special memory for participants and a stepping stone to helping more people with mental health needs. For Fall NAMIWalks, that day is set for October 10, on World Mental Health Day. Anyone from virtually anywhere can participate.
You can walk a 5K in your neighborhood -- or in your imagination. You can skip rope, bake a cake, sing a song or make people laugh with a stand-up act. Whatever your occupation of the day, you'll be adding to the nation's storehouse of hope. At a time when we all need it.
Over the past few years, our NAMI Coastal team has been the highest fundraising team in the state! We'd love to have you join our team or create your own.

What participants are doing on event day:
Together, we are moving closer to a world where all people affected by mental illness live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares.
Here are just a few reasons people have shared about why they walk:
"We're all a team - here to support and encourage each other along the way"
"NAMI brings families together. This is the 8th year my sister has walked with me."
"I know recovery is possible, and because I care about your health"
"So it's OK to ask for help"
"To end stigma. My mental illness doesn't define me!"
"For my mom. Because mental illness doesn't mean she's worthless."
"For my recovery"
"For my other half"
"In memory of grandma"
"To kick depression's butt!"
Beyond helping the continuation of free educational/support programs for your community and helping to end the stigma, click the link below to learn other ways your fundraising efforts are recognized!
